If yall are beginners like me to the DIY universe, let’s take a stroll together.
First off, we go CRAY for REAL wood furniture. I’m talking about real wood inside AND out; not just the drawers.
But, let’s be realistic. Not many of those exists and if they do, they are snagged up pretty quick. I am here to talk about the pieces we pick up that LOOK like real wood, but it is indeed laminate ๐
BUT, do not fret! I have made MANY of mistakes with this material and have learned from them. In the past I thought maybe I could just scuff sand, wipe them down , and then paint. Ya know, like we regularly would with any chalk-paint project. WRONG!! Do not waste your tears, time, and precious product inn doing so.
I will list the necessary steps in assuring perfect chalk painted painted laminate pieces AND increase re-sale value ๐

Supplies:
- 120 Grit Sandpaper
- 220 Grit Sandpaper
- TSP Cleaner or some type of cleaner/degreaser
- Paint primer: this is the one I used in video KILZ. But I prefer Zinsser Shellac based primer
- Paint brushes
- My handy pail
- Water mister (optional)
- Dixie Bell paint in Apricot
- Polycrylic

Steps to chalk paint laminate furniture
- Remove your hardware
- Scuff sand your piece with 120 Grit sand paper
- Wipe down entire price with a cleaner/ degreaser
- Pour primer into pan and prime your piece. Follow manufactures directions in dry time.
- Sand down any raised surfaced with a 220 grit sand paper
- Paint your desired chalk paint color
- Sand again with 220 sandpaper (optional)
- Apply IOD (optional)
- Seal with polycrylic or wax or oil
