Makeup is a passion of mine that is no doubt, but my career is in the medical field. The FIRST ethical principle we learn in nursing school is “Do no harm”. I abide by this principle throughout my daily life and makeup is no exception.
How does one do makeup in the middle of a pandemic? How does one do it safely? Is it even worth it? These questions were running though my head when I came back to South Mississippi. I had a few ladies message me about doing makeup again, but I will be honest, it scared me. It scared me because of the unknowns associated with this virus.
At first, I was not taking any booking whatsoever. Then, as the virus got a little more evolved so did our research. Don’t get me wrong, it is STILL deadly, but there were things we could do to slow its spread. With these guidelines in place, I stared to brainstorm ways to get back into the groove of the makeup SAFELY for those involved.
Here are some of my suggestions and MY personal rules for when I do makeup. I hope this helps those trying to get back and here’s the things, if you do not feel safe or are sick, simply do not do it. The risk is NOT worth it!
Guidelines for Freelance Makeup During a Pandemic:
- Slow the spread of the virus
- I will wear a mask to protect myself and others when doing makeup. The person sitting in my chair does not have to wear a mask.
- I keep hand sanitizer by my side at all times
- I will lysol my entire station between clients
- No sharing
- Used to, I’d bring home my beauty blenders clean and sanitize them. I do not think that is enough during times like these. So, instead, I will purchase brand new blenders for each client and let them have it at the end of their sessions
- I buy TONS of disposable mascara wands and lip wands
- I will also leave whatever lip product I am using for the party with them. Meaning, all the lip liners and the lipsticks will be left for the party to have. Make sure to also leave disposable lip wands with the party to prevent spread of virus.
- Using extra protection
- This may seem like overkill, but in times like these you can never be too cautious. I recently purchased a UV portable sanitizing wand that I take with me on large parties. This allows me to disinfect my brushes and makeup pallets effectively and quickly.
- You should always disinfect brushes in between clients. I will list some quick drying disinfectant below
- Instead of using the back of our hand, use this makeup plate instead
Remember these are just some of the new techniques i’ve adapted during this time. This virus is ever changing and it has alot of unknowns. Therfore, I will adpat these guuidelines for myself to keep me and my clients safe in my chair.
If yall have any suggestions, I’d LOVE to hear more from you. Please leave comments in the section below.
In the meantime stay safe, wash your hands, wear a mask if you can, and let’s practice social distancing as much as we can!
