This is a VERY common question that I get asked almost all the time. At the current moment, I have stopped taking appointments and doing clients. With the pandemic it was hard to keep my hobby going, plus we did just pack up and move 700 miles away.
I am a self taught makeup enthusiest. I don’t want to call myself a “makeup artist” just because I do not want to take away the very talented people who do this for a living. Don’t get me wrong I LOVE doing makeup, it is an outlet for my creativity, but I don’t spend enough time doing it to claim myself as an “artist”. Ok. Enough with the formalities.
Let’s get right to it.
I started getting interested in makeup accidentally. While I was going through nurse practitioner school, I would spend hours on END studying. My brain told me that it needed a mental break, just something other than body systems, ha! So, I drew my attention to YouTube. I went on there to escape in a sense and stumbled upon bloggers doing makeup. It fascinated me. The art and creativity that goes into eyeshadows to the different techniques with different eye shapes. Everything about it peaked my interest. So much so that I allotted time into my study sessions for makeup breaks, lol
After watching a few YouTubers do their thing. I figured, I would just play around just to see what it was about. Luckily, Reed’s side of the family had a lot of willing participants (some I had to bribe, ha!). I started out with a couple eye shadow pallets and drugstore products. BTW, do NOT knock drugstore products. I have some in my kit that are my HOLY GRAILS. I will do a separate blog post about my kit.
After practicing on family members and friends, I was feeling pretty good about my techniques. Then everything changed. On my birthday about 4 years ago, my besties came together and got me an airbrush makeup kit. I had never tried my hand at airbrush makeup before, but I have had it applied on my wedding day by Kasey Acuff and it was FANTASTIC. Now, more than ever I was on a mission to master this art.
I CANNOT stress this enough: PRACTICE! I don’t know how may hours, days I have spent on YouTube learning techniques and researching products on makeup. This hobby of mine went straight into a passion that I couldn’t shake. I finally got myself taking before and after pictures just to document my progress. As I got better at it, I asked my participants if they didn’t mind me posting their pictures. From there, I created a Facebook page just for my makeup progress Trans-Formations (Reed came up with that 😛 ). Afterwards, I posted more on Instagram and that is when I got the attention of Aeroblend, the company of the airbrush makeup kit I use. they reached out to me to become an ambasador and I accepted.
My story isn’t a typical story. Makeup accidentally fell into my life, but I am so blessed that it did because it has brought me new friendships in Picayune when i am doing people’s makeup. The support that I have back home drives me and it is THAT hometown support that will keep pushing me in this passion of mine.
So, than you Picayune, MS
