Since we are back home in Mississippi, we’ve gotten a lot of questions about where we’ll be living. Just a crash course, we built a brand new home in August 2019 and then up and moved to Kentucky February 2020. That house was sold, thankfully, before we left for Kentucky. We LOVED the house, just not the location.
Hubbs isn’t really a “subdivision” type of guy. He grew up on 40 acres so if he had it his way, we’d be living off the grid in Alaska 😒. We built our dream home in a subdivision because of the call criteria of the hospital. Now that we are back, we have some EXCITING news!
We will be remodeling his grandparent’s place just up the road. It has 5 acres on a dead end road and it has the nostalgia of it being family land. My husband would tell me the memories he’s had growing up on this land and it’s icing on the cake when his dad has his own stories to add.
This house was built by his grandfather in 1970. Apparently he was a master carpenter and everything was done very meticulously. That must be why this house has such amazing bones! It’s definitely seen better days, but I cannot wait to take yall along as we bring back the charm to this family home!
I have taken some before pictures of the place, but I’m not going to lie, I was a bit overwhelmed. We never really had to ever consider a house that had to be remodeled, but I was reminded by a professional house flipper (Rindi – I am biased 😜) that it takes time and to see beyond the clutter.
With her advice in mind, I started to plan out our remodel and come up with some ideas for the house. I have a few in mind so far that I will share with yall today, but it’s just the begining and as we ALL know ANYTHING can happen.
So, I hope yall stick it out with me as we begin our remodel! I am excited, scared, and nervous all at the same time! More than likely I will have all the progress pictures and inspiration on my Pinterest board as well. Where would we be without Pinterest, ha!
Outside/Carport Porch
So, as you can tell the outside is a tad bit overgrown. What I didn’t get the chance to take a picture of was the spot in which papaw had a BEAUTIFUL luscious garden. I was told his crops were the talk of the town and the soil he had was pretty amazing. Our goal is to get that garden back up again. I will warn yall, I do not have a green thumb, but luckily for me I have some pretty amazing gardeners in the family 🤗. We’re definitely going to update the outside with a fresh coat of paint and I have some plans for the back carport.
Kitchen / Utility Room
The kitchen right now seems closed off. There are a set of cabinets that hit you right when you walk in. So we were going to knock out those cabinets so we can open it up a tad. The HUGE reno comes in when we will be knocking out the wall in between the kitchen and the current piano room. The piano room will be our dining room, but it will be open to the kitchen. The problem already is that it is a load bearing wall, so we have to come up with some ideas to open it up safely.
There is a dining table to the left when you walk in. We were going to change that into maybe a set of tree halls or even mudroom lockers. We aren’t quite sure just yet. The kitchen cabinets will get a facelift. I am torn between colors for the cabinets. My mind is telling me to play it safe and go with an off white color, but I want something to pay tribute to the roots of the home. My heart wants to go with green kitchen cabinets! I’m crazy right, ha! We will have a brick backsplash with german schmear and a wood stained kitchen island. Our countertops will be a white with light grey veining. It makes sense in my head, but again this is just preliminary. Let me know what yall think
The utility room is a combination of the laundry room and pantry. The picture does it no justice, but it is quite a generous size! We will get new shelving, washer and dryer will go against back wall, and more than likely we will have our deep freezer in there too.

Adding a Bathroom
This may sound like a daunting task, but it won’t be too bad for us. Luckily for us, when papaw built this awesome house it was built on a raised platform. Meaning, that there is no concrete slab underneath. This makes it super easy for us to go underneath the house and run water and electrical through the floors. We were going to close off this doorway to the foyer and make it a full bath. The tub shower combo will go against the wall, the toilet right beside it and the double vanity against the right wall. I “sketched” it out but it looks REALLY bad, haha! It’s in my head 🤷🏻♀️
So far this is what I have in my head. We shall see what kind of issues we may run into with an older home, but I am soo thankful for the good bones! I hope yall can enjoy the process with us! Stay tuned for updates!
